About Cohort 3

2021

Dekha Hassan is in the middle of her nursing residency with Harborview Medical Center. Michel Mugisha is working as a systems engineer at PACCAR. Chhavi Mehra recently returned home to India. She is helping with the family business and seeking employment. Megan Nguyen is working as a computer programmer for Disney. Cesar Rios is a nurse at Scripps Medical Center in San Diego. Stephanie Sanchez is also a nurse at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Currently, five Alfies work at HMC. Kaddy Suso is now a member of the Army National Guard training as a medic. Yue Zhang and Chloe Zabrek graduated with their Master of Professional Accountancy degree – Yue, at the University of Washington, and Chloe, at the University of California at Davis. Chloe is now working for a Northern California-based accounting firm. Yue is working with Ernst & Young. Both are currently studying for the CPA exam.

2020

9 Alfies of Cohort 3 graduated this academic year.  The tenth member of this cohort, Kaddy Suso, has taken a leave of absence for medical reasons. We expect that she will resume her studies this fall. 

 Like the Alfies before them, this cohort excelled academically and otherwise.

 7 Alfies from this cohort received academic honors:

  • Summa Cum Laude–Chhavi Mehra and Yue Zhang;

  • Magna Cum Laude –Cesar Rios III, Stephanie Sanchez, and Chloe Zabrek;

  • Cum Laude – Megan Nguyen and Dekha Hassan.

2 Alfies received university wide awards:

  • Chhavi Mehra is the fifth Alfie to receive the Distinguished Graduating Student Award

  • Stephanie Sanchez is the second Alfie to receive the Peter Faber Integrity Award

2 Alfies received departmental honors:

  • Chhavi Mehar received the Talvich Comminutions and Media Dept Award

  • Yue Zhang received the Spirit of Albers Award from the Business School.

5 Alfies assumed leadership positions on campus:

  • Chhavi Mehra and Stephanie Sanchez served as Ignatian Leaders

  • Michel Mugisha served as the President of Tau Beta-Engineering Society

  • Mina Omerovic served as the Secretary of Tau Beta-Engineering Society

  • Yue Zhang served as Vice President of Beta Alpha-Financial Information Society.

During their tenure at Seattle University, 9 Alfies were members of at least one honor society and Chhavi Mehra is the second Alfie to have her Alfie Summer Philosophy paper published in the Seattle University Undergraduate Journal.

These Alfies earned their degrees in a variety of disciplines, 3 in Engineering, 3 in Nursing, 2 in Business, and 1 in Journalism.


2019

In Fall 2019,  the Cohort 3 Alfie Scholars are immersed in their studies. 2 are Engineering majors, 3 are Nursing majors, 2 are Business majors, 1 is a Biology major, and 1 is a Journalism major.

  • 9 scholars are members of at least one honor society.

  • 1 scholar had a paper from the first summer course published.

During the time they have been at the university,

  • 1 scholar has been serving as a student representative on the Tenure and Promotion Committee

  • 1 scholar is a member of 2 student groups

  • 1 scholar is a student mentor

The social issues they addressed in their civility leadership scholarship included titles such as

  • Discrimination, Discipline, and Disparities Prevent Learning

  •   The Ethics of Medical Tourism

2018

Our 2018 Alfie Scholars cohort represent a diverse range of ages from 18 to 38. They come from Bosnia, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Somalia, The Gambia, Vietnam, and the United States. Six are the first in their families to attend college. Two are parents.  Eight scholars speak a total of 14 languages in addition to English.

Three are Engineering majors, three are Nursing majors, two are Business majors, one is a Cell and Molecular Biology major, and one is a Journalism major.

The students are transferring from five Washington State community colleges: Bellevue, Everett, Highline, South Seattle, and Seattle Central. We enjoyed welcoming them to the Alfie Scholars community during the summer program.
