Prepare Yourself for University with the Alfie Scholars Summer Program

Let's be real: the type of students who excel in the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University have a hunger for knowledge and want to use their experiences to shape a better world.

One way we help our scholars do that is through an intensive summer program that focuses on academic skills such as writing and presenting. The summer program also focuses on the whole person and fosters a community among the Alfie Scholars.

While writing an academic paper during your summer may sound like a lot, you'll have an entire team of advisors to support you. And did we mention the $15,000 per year scholarship distributed over two years?

I think the summer program overall, like academic, emotional aspect, all of it combined, just really honed in on the fact that it was, like they really centered in and made sure that it was about an individual self and all the aspects of like an individual's identity.

Well, as busy as it was, I would say that it really, it gave me like a real deep sense of like purpose, 'cause just thinking about like that summer period, and we're in the pandemic, I think like without the program, I would've just had a real empty play, probably would've made for a pretty boring summer, we're already indoors. And so being engaged with that I think like really just forced me to like continue to grow throughout the summer during that time that we had a break.

To be honest, for me, or for the first time it's kind of like bootcamp. Yeah, it's like really a lot going on because like I never did like so many stuff at once than when I was in college, but this is kind of like a lot going on and to take on. But after, from two week, I feel like, oh this is really to prepare me, like step from step, like we have to do like the research, essay at the end, but I feel like for the first time, oh I'm so overwhelmed, how I'm gonna write this, because like, it's kinda looks more professional and I'm not ready for that. But allow me to process, like the Professor and Paula and everyone are like, help me with that, like step by step. So like from step one, step two, step three, every steps like have prepare to the end of like during school. I never learned that in come like before.

And so during the like the summer program I think it was just like one of those unique moments in your education where like, it truly resonates with you as an individual considering like how focused the program is on the students. And so it just felt like really like customized to me and so yeah.

Is when you sit down with a child and you open a book about letters or animals and you're like, wow that makes sense, that's a cow. So it was a very much of an experience of discernment reflection and also enlightenment because it was a moment of like, look at all these people around me that are so great. And I have so much to learn from them so much to learn from Paula, so much to learn from Carol, from Scott all these people that I'm learning so much from.

And that's really why the summer program was so special because they had the research aspect it was the academic aspect. And then we also, dove deep into ideas about philosophy and discovered like, oh philosophy of a human person that was equally important. And then the emotional aspect where they honed in on like what it means to be a leader what it means to like lead with civility who were your inspirations and just that welcoming of like, we want to learn from you.

It's definitely helped me a lot, first with time management. Second it was a lot of like researching writing skills. We had to like read a lot of research papers that's really helped me. That kind of like helped me see that I'm actually able to be read so much like academic stuff. And that just prepared me for like more reading in the future and more research.

Yeah, I absolutely loved the summer program.

And that's the summer program experience that I had I was super thankful for.
