Alfie Scholars Cohort 5 (2020)

About Cohort 5

The nine members of Cohort 5 (one scholar having withdrawn at the end of summer 2020) have done remarkably well academically and have made their mark on campus during the pandemic and in the remote learning environment.

Seven are members of at least one honor society, and one has been selected to participate in the Sociology Departmental Honors Program.

Seven Alfie Scholars have been selected for or elected to fourteen leadership roles on campus:

  • Chelsea Arnold has been elected the President of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society. She also created, along with fellow Cohort-5 Alfie Afrikaan Sahra, the Civility Pledge Project, a program designed to “[h]elp empower YOUth to create a better today and tomorrow by practicing pandemic safety protocols and leading others to do the same.”

  • Viktoria Buina is Co-Facilitator for the Parents with Kids group. She is currently completing a cardiovascular diagnostic ultrasound internship with Swedish First Hill.

  • Anastasiya Davis has been elected the Public Relations Officer for the Seattle University Student Nurses Association. She is also a Program Coordinator and Instructor in Stop the Bleed.

  • Abem Fekade-Tessema won the Seattle University Mission Award for Leadership, served on the Presidential Search Committee, and was elected Representative for the junior class to the Student Government of Seattle University and will be a senior class Representative, as well.

  • Brenda Mata-Diaz has been selected as the Mentorship Officer for the upcoming Class of ’22 Transfer Cohort.

  • Yao Yao was chosen to be the Chair of Women in Tech at the Association for Computer Machinery. After a successful summer internship, Yao has a full-time offer with Intel after graduation.

  • Four members of this cohort, Chelsea Arnold, Abem Fekade-Tessema, Brenda Mata-Diaz, and Afrikaan Sahra, were named Ignatian Leaders by the university. Ignatian Leaders participate in a leadership formation project, collaborate with the university to offer mentoring to other students, and meet with university leaders to discuss the student experience.

Three Alfies are majoring in Nursing, two in Computer Science, and one each in Business Economics, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Psychology and Forensic Psychology (a double major in two different departments), and Sociology. The cohort’s average GPA after their junior year is an amazing 3.82.

2020

The nine 2020 Alfie cohort members are between the ages of 19 and 37. Six are women. Four were born outside the United States, specifically in Belarus, China, Kenya, and Russia. One is an international student. Six are the first in their families to attend college. Eight scholars speak at least one other language in addition to English. They speak the following 9 different languages among them: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Belarusian, May, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili. And this is the first year we have two students who are rising Juniors from Seattle University.

The scholars are transferring from five Washington State community colleges: Bellevue, North Seattle, Seattle Central, Edmonds and Tacoma Colleges.

These new scholars bring a wide variety of experiences, perspectives, and career goals. 3 are working to complete degrees in Nursing, 2 in Computer Science, 1 in Diagnostic Ultrasound, 1 in Forensic Psychology, and 1 in Sociology. We look forward to welcoming these exceptional students.

Amazingly, seven of the nine Cohort 5 scholars were able to come together for a Summer 2020 meet-up.
