Reflecting on a Transformative Evening: My Experience at the Gates Foundation Discovery Center Panel – November 2nd, 2023

I was honored to participate in the Gates Foundation Discovery Center panel, Creating Connections for a Sustainable Tomorrow, on November 2nd. The energy and insights from that evening are still vivid in my mind. The event was organized alongside United Way of King County's Emerging Leaders 365, Success Cohorts, Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS), and Seattle University's Alfie Scholars. It was a powerful gathering of young leaders dedicated to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)and their impact on our community.

As a panelist, I shared my journey as a Somali refugee from Kenya and how my experiences have shaped my commitment to supporting immigrants, refugees, and marginalized communities in South King County. I have always focused on employing advocacy, business, and technology skills to create sustainable cities and communities, a mission deeply aligned with the SDGs.

Joining me was Taylor Roberson from the United Way of King County. She eloquently spoke about her diverse educational experiences, from an inner-city school in St. Louis to completing her master's degree in the UK. Taylor's current work in engaging young professionals through Emerging Leaders 365 highlighted the crucial role of community engagement in achieving No Poverty and Quality Education.

A fellow panelist and a graduate student at the University of Washington, Fadumo Roble, brought her perspective on social justice and human rights. Fadumo's involvement in various organizations, including the United Nations in Geneva, demonstrated the global impact of our local actions and the importance of inclusivity and equity in our collective quest for social justice.

Abari Charles, a South Sudanese American and a passionate advocate for refugee rights, brilliantly moderated the panel. Abari's diverse experiences, particularly in participatory budgeting in Seattle, provided a rich backdrop for our discussions, underscoring the interconnectedness of our efforts.

Deeply grateful to Deborah Sepulveda and Eliza Penick for creating such a meaningful and impactful event. Additionally, I must acknowledge the invaluable support and mentorship of Carol Cochran and Paula Lustbader.

The evening wasn't just about sharing; it was an immersive experience in learning and networking, with opportunities to explore the Gates Foundation's new gallery on the SDGs. The passion and dedication in the room were palpable, and I left feeling even more committed to my mission.

To all the speakers, organizers, mentors, and participants – thank you for a truly inspiring and thought-provoking evening. Your stories, dedication, and the vibrant discussions we had are a powerful reminder of the role we each play in building a sustainable and equitable future.
