Alfie Scholars gives a Civility Shout-Out to Ms. Katie Moats, a junior at Penn State who is majoring in English.  Ms. Moats posted an open letter to professors on Penn State’s student blog. In We Know You’re Trying: An Open Letter To Our Professors, Ms. Moats acknowledges the challenges professors faced with “zero notice” to move their courses online and to “do their jobs the best way that they could in a way that was completely unfamiliar to them.” While she says that she is not asking students to thank their professors, she is asking them to recognize that they are trying. She ends with, “What we’re all going through is not easy, and we’re only going to get through it together.” In asking for students to see the humanity of their professors, to see that they are trying, Ms. Moats is practicing a fundamental principle of civility: that we are all connected by our shared humanity. A little patience and kindness is a good thing, especially in these challenging times. Thank you Ms. Moats.
