Congratulations to Abem Fekade-Tessema (Business Economics '22), a future law school applicant and recipient of the Western Region of National Black Law Students Association (WRBLSA) Pre-Law Diversity Scholarship. The award recognizes successful and diverse pre-law students who seek to invoke positive change in the community.

As a recipient of the award, Abem attended the Western Regional Convention and was acknowledged during the 53rd Annual Awards Gala, held virtually on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Justice G. Helen Whitener, a member of our extended Alfie family, was named Judge of the Year during the ceremony, as well.

Abem's goal is to obtain a bachelor's degree in Economics to then attend law school. He would like to be a mindful leader and use his education to open a pathway into courtroom litigation, entrepreneurship, and politics.

Reflecting on the experience, Abem shared, "Through my caring mentors, I have been able to come across several worthwhile opportunities pertaining to my goals. I was directed to the WRBLSA organization and informed of the chance to apply for a pre-law scholarship. Although I was insecure about facing rigorous competition to attain the award, I did not turn away from applying because of the invaluable experience of networking with the students and mentors who attended the event conference and Gala. When I was informed that I had been granted the award, I felt as if I had propelled upwards towards the next steps of becoming an attorney. Before the event, I did not know what I was looking to gain, but surely, I left feeling well prepared and well connected to take on the next steps."

WRBLSA is part of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA). NBLSA represents over 6,000 minority law students from more than 200 chapters across the United States, and in six other countries. The Western Region is composed of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, encompassing 40 law schools and more than 350 members. NBLSA's mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black and other minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
